1. Who is the intended audience?

This site is aimed at the knowledgeable shipyard worker who is learning to use ShipConstructor. These tutorials are best used as a prerequisite to on-site implementation training, and as an introduction to ShipConstructor for new staff.

2. How long will this take me?

This depends on you! You might decide to quickly view all the concepts over a period of several days, and then start working on your project using ShipConstructor. Or you may wish to spend a week of concentrated effort on a sample project, taking your model right through to the printing of Assembly Drawings.

ShipConstructor enables designers to automatically create assembly drawings and computer NC cutting code for plate and profile parts. This implies prior knowledge in reading drawings, in the conventions in throwing plates and in that yard's specific fabrication processes and strengths. Most users with this kind of background experience become effective within 2 or 3 days of learning ShipConstructor's basic concepts and icons.

ShipConstructor, as a tool, significantly reduces re-work, and significantly shortens the design time, especially when piping and HVAC are added to the database

3. How much does this cost?

All these tutorials are covered through your UM&S subscription.

4. What if I have a question?

If you get stuck, email us. Staff may be on the road from time to time, but someone will get back to you.

5. Are there reference manuals available?

Links to all the latest manuals, html help files and pdf documents are located on the Downloads page. Sample models and detailed exercises linked to the tutorials are embedded within the tutorials themselves.

6. Should I complete each lesson in order?

Not necessarily, each tutorial stands alone. However, later tutorials assume you understand concepts covered in earlier tutorials. If you have a specific question, try the tutorial that covers it. If you are new to ShipConstructor, it is best to work through the tutorials in order.

7. Do you track my progress?

At this point, there is no tracking of progress, and those referencing the tutorials and videos can do so in any order.

8. Can I earn a certificate?

At this time, there is no formal certification for completion of courses and lessons in the training series.

9. Will similar tutorials soon be available for other modules?

We plan to release tutorials covering the Distributed Systems and Hull modules during the Fall of 2007. A special set of tutorials focused on the needs of shipyard management will also become available at that time.

10. What comes next?

Tutorials covering the remaining ShipConstructor modules are being developed, and they will be added to this site through 2007 and into 2008.

11. Do I need High Speed Internet?

Not necessarily. You can choose to pre-download videos by right clicking on them and saving them to your computer for viewing later. In the future, we also hope to be able to offer the tutorials as a dvd collection. For DVD-based delivery, case no internet connection will be required.

12. What if I am using SC2005 or SC2006?

These tutorials will work well for those using SC2006 and SC2008. The underlying engine running SC2005 is quite different, and relationships between parts, and even the part definition processes are quite different. If you are using SC2005, you should have two manuals titled Structure Tutorial and Outfitting Tutorial that are more appropriate for training use.
